I talked about the hottest makeup trends seen on the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival. It was my first time ever having to speak and demo on live TV.  To say I was nervous would be an understatement.  I totally blacked out and barely remembered what I said, I went into total auto-pilot!  It was pretty exciting to sit down later that evening and watch the segment with my husband and kids.

What a year 2017 was! Lots and lots of highlights for me and I am beyond grateful for being able to do what I love.

Lets go over some of my 2017 highlights:

I started the year off right with travelling down South to Varadero Cuba for my first wedding of the year.  I knew the bride-Sherri from the fitness industry.  She was once a bikini competitor and I had done her hair and makeup for her fitness competitions in the past.  I was honored that she chose me to do her hair and makeup for her destination wedding.  Here are some gorgeous shots from Sherri and Alex’s wedding which were also featured in Hitched Destination Magazine.

In March I got to work with one of my favorite celebrity clients Elisha Cuthbert.  I don’t work with her as often as I use to because she moved to Ottawa because her hockey player hubby-Dion Phaneuf got traded to the Ottawa Senators.  So it was great to see her again and to get to doll her up for her press day for the movie Goon 2 Last of the Enforcers.  We traveled all day where she had interviews with Chum FM, Etalk, Entertainment Tonight Canada & The Social to name a few.

I kept her look casual and clean for the day and I used Burnt Spice Retro Matte Lipstick from MAC Cosmetics on her lips.

We then had a mini break and I got her even more glammed up for the red carpet premeire of the movie.   She wanted a thick winged liner and a plummy lip.  Her hair was kept down with soft waves.  Gorgeous!!!

Next up I worked with MAC Cosmetics at the Canadian Screen Awards where I got to powder down the nose of Mr. 90210 himself Jason Priestley!  If only I could only go back to my 17 year old self and let her know that she would be working with Brandon Walsh!  Haha.  He was lovely by the way!

Probably the coolest gig of the year was I was hired to do makeup and hair on the guests of Live with Kelly & Ryan for 2 episodes they were filming in Niagara Falls Canada.  I was in charge of making all their guests/talent look fabulous for the cameras.  The first guest just happened to be none other then the Prime Minister of Canada-Justin Trudeau.

Some of the other guests I got to work with were singer Erin Bowman, actor Nathan Fillion and hip hop artist French Montana.

I finished the year off right with adding 3 Magazine covers to my resume, being a contributor to D’Fyne Magazine and a gorgeous bridal shoot that is featured in the latest Wedluxe Magazine.

On top of all these highlights I have to say my bridal beauty business I Do! Beauty Co. is doing really well.  We are currently booking for select dates in 2018.  If you or someone you know is getting hitched this year, feel free to reach out, we would love to be part of your big day!

Now what exactly is guyliner???  Simply put, its guys who wear eyeliner!  This trend has really taken off in the last 5 years and its often seen on male musicians when they preform on stage or tv.

I have applied makeup to 2 of these rockers that are featured in the quiz.

Here is Pete Wentz and I after I did his makeup for the MMVAs in 2005.  He has absolutely beautiful eyes and I recognized his peepers in the quiz right away.

I also worked with Brandon Flowers-the lead singer of  The Killers, for a Much Music interview a few years ago.

Guyliner can really look sexy on the right guy.  I’m all for it and I hope this trend is here to stay!

For Beatrice’s hair she wanted simple soft curls and to wear it down.  For her makeup she loves a winded liner and she wanted a shimmery eyelid.  I used MAC‘s Retrospeck eyeshadow on her eyelids and Inglot gel liner in Black to shape her eyes.  For her lips she wanted a fun coral tone so I used Lustering lipstick from MAC Cosmetics.

Here is her performance on CBC’s q Radio.  Its an acoustic version of her newest single ‘Carry On’.  Beatrice’s voice is so beautiful it gives me goose bumps!

Coeur de Pirate’s album is being released through Dare to Care Records on August 28th 2015-TODAY!  Its a collection of both French and English songs.  She is also touring throughout Canada in the Fall.  Here are the tour dates:

As you can see I have a few

I prefer to retire a brush once it’s been used for the day and I will wash/sanitize it thoroughly at night.  I find quick brush cleansing in between clients is not always feasible and I also find my brushes don’t perform the same when they have brush cleanser in them.  Most of my brushes are from MAC Cosmetics as they make quality brushes that are consistent so they’re an easy ‘go-to’ for me.  It takes a special brush to break into the lineup and become a staple in my brush belt – Enter Sigma!  I had heard about Sigma brushes from other artists who have raved about them, so I was really excited when I received one of Sigma’s top selling brushes-The E45 Small Tapered Blending Brush – to try out.

It has a small tapered head with a precisely pointed tip.  This brush is great for adding colour into the eye crease allowing lots of control over placement.  With the firmer bristles of this brush it also prevents a lot of fallout which can happen with a more fluffy blending brush.

My first impression of the brush was the quality.  Just holding the brush I had to take note of the craftsmanship.  The synthetic brush hairs are super soft which is always important for the comfort of my clients-nobody wants to have a scratchy bristled brush touching their eyes!  The ferrule of the brush has a patented 3 crimp technology which will ensure the brush will stay intact which is important whether it’s being used for personal use or on my clients.  And lastly the wooden handles have 8 coats of paint, making them scratch & chip resistant.

This all sounds fancy and intriguing but the true test is how does this brush preform?  Like any product/brush that I want to add to my professional kit I must try it out on myself first.

Here is what I found:

1. The brush hairs picked up my eyeshadow product nicely.

2. The small brush tip fit perfectly into my eye crease making it foolproof to sculpt my eye and the brush hairs felt really soft.

3. When I washed the brush it was easy to remove all the product and the brush did not shed.

4. Once the brush dried after I washed it, it had retained its original shape.

Overall I really loved this brush from Sigma and I plan on adding more of their brush collection to my brush belt.  I might even have to pick up a few for my personal makeup bag

I would give The Sigma E45 Tapered Blending Brush a 5 out of 5!!!!  My highest rated product yet!

As you can see I do look quite different in each look but it was just makeup that transformed me, no scalpels were used here!  Not wearing mascara and eyeliner is the main difference.

Troy Surratt-Uma’s makeup artist – wanted to put these plastic surgery rumors to rest so he explained what he did:

Uma and Troy decided to create a makeup look that was “more editorial than it was celebrity.  We did a much stronger brow and a bold lip for a French sort of feel,” Surratt told Refinery 29. “I applied a creamy foundation for all-over glow, and then contoured the hairline and her cheekbones, adding warmth. I applied the lip color and then we just kept the eyes really, really light.  Then, I finished with a shimmering, silky-beige shadow on her lids, and went with no mascara at all…sort of a reaction against all the fake lashes we’ve been seeing on the red carpet.”

So there was a deliberate attempt to try something different and maybe even to spark up some dialogue with that last comment about fake lashes.  Unfortunately for Uma, Troy’s attempt to shake things up just didn’t come together in reality the way that he imagined it and she ended up in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.  That “all-over glow” caught the blinding red carpet flashes in all the wrong ways, and the lack of definition around the eyes takes all of the excitement out of the look and made everyone speculate that Uma had had work done.

I hope my #Umamakeupchallenge demonstrates the power of makeup, and more importantly that just because someone tries to push the boundaries and mix things up with their makeup doesn’t mean we should face-shame them into oblivion and kick the rumour mill into high gear!  Sure, this time the risk didn’t really pay off, but if anything that should put the spotlight on Troy!  Uma is still just as beautiful as ever!

And besides, if an actor DOES get plastic surgery it’s really nobody’s business but their own.  But why bother with face-lifts, Botox and fillers when your friendly neighborhood makeup artist can transform you with a flick of a brush?   And its an added bonus that our work can easily be washed off if you don’t like it!

and Marianas Trench.

It was a fun filled show hosted by Canadian Crooner Michael Bublé.  It was great to be there and to witness such a well-produced award show.

The Junos are taking place this Sunday in Winnipeg and although I won’t be backstage this year I will definitely be tuning in.

Here is a breakdown of all the makeup icons I selected:

1. Clara Bow-a silent film actress in the 1920s. Her signature look was penciled in eyebrows that were thin and they sat lower than where her real brow would be to create a sad, almost cartoonish look.

2. Lucille Ball-I LOVE LUCY! An actress/comedienne who rose to fame in the 40s and 50s. Everyone loved her perfect blend of class and impeccable comedic timing. She was known for her signature red hair and her typical full face of makeup complete with rounded brows and lips.

3. Marilyn Monroe-Arguably she is still the biggest/most popular sex symbol in the world! A troubled actress who was an on screen siren in the 50s and 60s. Her look always included pointed brows, winged out liner that created sleepy/bedroom eyes, red perfect lips and of course her beauty mark on her left cheek.

4. Twiggy-a waif thin model who gained popularity in the late 60s. Her look was very androgynous and she was known for her big eyes that were accentuated with false lashes and lashes were actually painted on her lower lash line.

5.Gene Simmons-Gene’s wild stage persona ‘The Demon’ made his debut back in 1974 with the glam rock band Kiss. The look included white skin with a black bat-wing design around the eyes which was inspired by the comic book character Black Bolt.

6. Madonna-The Material Girl herself has changed her look throughout the years but she really helped to define makeup, hair and clothing trends in the 80s. From the teased hair, colourful eye makeup and extremely bushy eyebrows-Madonna is without a doubt a huge makeup icon for a decade that a lot of us would like to forget about :/

7. Gwen Stefani-Maybe she wouldnt be most people’s top pick as a makeup icon from the 90s but she’s a favorite of mine and I had to include her into the mix. I loved Gwen’s boyish yet girlie look as the lead singer of the Pop-Ska band No Doubt. To this day she is one of my all time favorite makeup icons and she makes me want to never leave my house without a bright red lip!

8. Lady Gaga-I have had the opportunity to do Lady Gaga’s makeup before so I thought she would be the perfect celebrity to transform into. She is so outside of the box when it comes to her makeup look and she is a great makeup icon for current times.

So needless to say, I had WAY too much fun turning myself into these characters and editing my video entry for Canada’s Best Beauty Talent. I wasnt selected to be on the show but my friend Cait Mizzi was and it was a great to watch her in action. Now time to watch my video-ENJOY!
