NYX in the SIX

Attention Attention!!!! NYX Professional Makeup is coming to Toronto VERY soon-YAY! Have you heard about NYX before?

Maybe you have seen a portion of their cosmetic line at Rexall or maybe in Target (when they were still in Canada-RIP).

Toni Ko is the founder of the multi-million dollar cosmetics brand. In the summer of 2014 Ko sold NYX to Loreal.

The company has done really well because Ko realized there was a gap in the cosmetic markets between prestige brands sold in department stores and mass brands sold in drugstores. She created NYX with the idea of having professional, richly pigmented products at affordable prices and that is exactly how I would describe their makeup!

There has been a lot of buzz about NYX freestanding stores opening in both the U.S. and Canada. To celebrate the launch of NYX in Toronto and to perpetuate this buzz, Lotus Leaf Communications put together a fun interactive launch party. It was held at a cool loft style space in the East End of Toronto. There were yummy treats, signature cocktails and lots of made-up faces! It was a blended crowd of makeup artists, beauty bloggers and Instagram personalities.

The slogan and hashtag were simply NYX in the SIX! Just search the hashtag on your fav social media platform and you will see all the fun photos from the party.

There was a photo booth with large lipstick and gloss cut outs to play with. They would take 3 consecutive photos and turn them into a GIF for you-super cute and totally fun!

Now you can’t attend a makeup launch party and leave empty handed….of course I left with some awesome swag! I got a goody bag filled with a selection of products from NYX.

NYX has over 2000 products that will be in the stores and this selection is a great start to discovering how awesome their makeup line really is.

The first locations to open in Toronto will be at Square One Mall, Fairview Mall, Scarborough Town Centre and Queen Street West. They are all scheduled to open in October 2015. Here are some renderings of the design for the Queen St West Location:

Back in 1977 when Star Wars hit theaters the concept of a large franchised movie pairing with a cosmetic company would have been crazy. In the past decade it has become the norm for makeup companies to launch a line of limited edition colours and products that correlate with a blockbuster film. In tune with this new trend Cover Girl has just announced that they will launch a collection of makeup that is based on none other then Star Wars!

A sneak peak of the collection was revealed and here are the first 2 images out of 6, one makeup look is based on a Droid and the other a Stormtropper:

Makeup was designed by the amazingly talented Pat McGrath.The Cover Girl-Star Wars collection is based on the Light and Dark side of the force.

The line will include these gorgeous shimmery lipsticks:

Waterproof Mascaras with quotes from the Light side of the force.

And Regular Mascaras with quotes from the Dark side.

And completing this collection will be gorgeous nail polishes with high shine

The collection will be available online starting September 4th, and it will hit stores in mid-September.

The only thing that could make this Star Wars collection any better was if they actually launched this line on May the 4th

‘MAKEUP MONDAY’ Artist Spotlight for T&M Magazine

Summer is always my peak season and I find I’m go go go and I rarely get a moment to reflect on my own career/accomplishments. So it was a nice surprise to wake up this morning to an email from Danailya Reece from T&M Magazine. Back in May she had asked me to be part of their Artist Spotlight where they feature Makeup Artists in the business. I was honoured to be asked and I submitted some photos and answered some questions about my career. I had actually forgotten about the interview being so busy so it was welcomed news today. Sometimes it’s also great to hear other people talk about your successes. I find being in Sales for over 15 years I’m good at talking up anything, anyone and any product but I find I can get rather humbled when it comes to boasting about myself. So thanks Danailya and T&M Magazine for putting a smile on my face and making me look really good!

‘MAKEUP MONDAYS’ Facepainting for Kids

I love kids and kids love me, so any time I get asked to facepaint for a kid’s birthday party I jump at the chance. I have been facepainting pretty much as long as I have been a Makeup Artist-that would be 13 years and counting! Over 10 years ago I even used my facepainting skills to fundraise money to travel to Costa Rica for a 3 month volunteer project with Youth Challenge International. (That’s me below with the purple hair)!

This past Canada Day weekend I was hired to facepaint at a 2 year olds birthday party. Here is my recipe and key ingredients to successfully be a superhero Facepainter for little kids:

1. Paper towel-Maybe it’s just me but I always seem to make a mess when facepainting! So paper towel comes in handy for any quick clean ups. I also like to put a few sheets of paper towel down before I set up my station so in case there are any spills they just get absorbed by the paper instead of ruining the table underneath.
2. Cotton Swabs-A makeup artist’s best friend. These are great for cleaning up any mistakes, softening any lines and they are great for making small circles such as dots on a lady bug!
3. A handheld mirror-Very important! There is nothing that tops the look on the kid’s face when they see the beautiful butterfly or tiger that you just painted on their face. I also find a mirror can help to focus a squirmy kid. You can get them to hold the mirror so they can watch exactly what you are doing and this helps them to concentrate.
4. A good assortment of glitter-who doesn’t love glitter? Throwing a little glitter on a facepaint design can be a great finishing touch to make it pop. The facepaint that I use is emollient based and has a little tackiness to it so I find I can just press a little glitter into the paint with my pinky finger and the glitter sticks.
5. Wipes-Cloth wipes that are saturated with makeup remover are always great to have. I use them to clean my hands in between each face, they can remove any mistakes and they are even great at removing some of the product from your brushes. Kids can sometimes have food or crusty boogers on their face and wipes come in handy to give them a wipe down before you apply any makeup. I pick up my wipes from Dollarama in the cosmetic section. They work great and when you go through as many wipes as I do the price point is perfect!
6. Pencil Sharpener-it’s important to sharpen any eyeliners you use for each new person to make sure they are clean. I will also use some of the paper towel to soften the tip of the pencil to make sure its gentle on the face.
7. A palette-great for using as a place to mix products/colours.
8. Facepaints! I use Paint Sticks from MAC Cosmetics. They are super easy to use and can be removed with any soap and water combo which parents are always grateful for. I carry every colour available but you could cut some corners by just getting the 3 primary colours, red, blue & yellow and black and white. Just keep in mind it will take more time to mix colours together and little kids can get impatient while waiting to get painted.
9. An assortment of brushes-I find brushes with synthetic bristles work best with any emollient based products. I use some of my older, slightly worn out brushes for facepainting. You could also go to a local art store like Curry’s and purchase synthetic brushes at a much cheaper price and use them as well (just make sure they won’t be rough on the face).
10. Alcohol-great for keeping everything sanitized and clean. I always use alcohol to wipe down any surfaces/products.
11. Pencil Eyeliners-I like to always have at least 1 black and 1 white eye pencil to use for outlines, details and highlights. Try to avoid any liners that are water resistant or waterproof-again you want the parents to be able to easily remove your creations at the end of the day.
And there you have it, follow my ‘recipe’ above and the outcome will be happy little clients that will have the best time ever!
