THROWBACK THURSDAY-PK SUBBAN

Do you remember that super hot day in August this year? Well I do and I felt like I won the jackpot that day because I was shooting a commercial in an indoor skating rink. I was even sporting a toque while the mercury rose past 40 degrees outside!

The commercial was for the Scotiabank Hockey Club and it featured their ambassador, NHLer and Montreal Canadian‘s Assistant Captain PK Subban.

There was a drone on set to capture a bird’s eye view of PK playing hockey with a bunch of lucky kids. Here are some behind the scene shots I took from the day:

PK was a great sport and he really didn’t require a lot in terms of makeup. I was just there for shine patrol and to make sure he looked great on camera aka grooming.

I was out with some friends last week and I got to see the commercial for the first time and now I can share with you. Here is the commercial we shot on that hot summer day-ENJOY!

‘THROWBACK THURSDAYS’ The 2013 Junos

I travel to Saskatchewan regularly for both work and to visit my husband’s side of the family. I was there last year for 3 weeks of photoshoots. I found out that the Juno Awards were going to be in Regina while I was there and I knew I had to be part of it. I ended up working with MAC Cosmetics backstage dolling up some big names in Canadian music. For the gala dinner I did makeup for a young country star Kira Isabella.

For the actual show I did makeup for rapper Madchild from Swollen Members,

the members of Dragonette

and Marianas Trench.

It was a fun filled show hosted by Canadian Crooner Michael Bublé. It was great to be there and to witness such a well-produced award show.

The Junos are taking place this Sunday in Winnipeg and although I won’t be backstage this year I will definitely be tuning in.

‘THROW BACK THURSDAYS’-Canada’s Best Beauty Talent

Over two years ago there was a buzz in the Canadian hair and makeup industry. Canada’s Best Beauty Talent was a new online show that was looking for contestants to compete for the title of Canada’s top makeup artist and top hairstylist. There were tons of video applications being loaded to YouTube and Vimeo daily and I must admit I was a addicted to watching them. It was so great to see the creativity and effort that fellow hairstylists and makeup artists went through to get noticed. I knew I had to apply to be on the show and I wanted to do something different than just turning a camera on myself and talking about my achievements as a makeup artist. I thought it would be cool to do a timeline of makeup icons throughout the decades. When I was a trainer for MAC Cosmetics I trained retail staff about period makeup through the decades and was able to use that knowledge to select which makeup icons I would use in my video. And then the process began…I decided to transform myself into 8 different makeup icons that I think have had a distinctive effect on my industry and trends.

Here is a breakdown of all the makeup icons I selected:

1. Clara Bow-a silent film actress in the 1920s. Her signature look was penciled in eyebrows that were thin and they sat lower than where her real brow would be to create a sad, almost cartoonish look.

2. Lucille Ball-I LOVE LUCY! An actress/comedienne who rose to fame in the 40s and 50s. Everyone loved her perfect blend of class and impeccable comedic timing. She was known for her signature red hair and her typical full face of makeup complete with rounded brows and lips.

3. Marilyn Monroe-Arguably she is still the biggest/most popular sex symbol in the world! A troubled actress who was an on screen siren in the 50s and 60s. Her look always included pointed brows, winged out liner that created sleepy/bedroom eyes, red perfect lips and of course her beauty mark on her left cheek.

4. Twiggy-a waif thin model who gained popularity in the late 60s. Her look was very androgynous and she was known for her big eyes that were accentuated with false lashes and lashes were actually painted on her lower lash line.

5.Gene Simmons-Gene’s wild stage persona ‘The Demon’ made his debut back in 1974 with the glam rock band Kiss. The look included white skin with a black bat-wing design around the eyes which was inspired by the comic book character Black Bolt.

6. Madonna-The Material Girl herself has changed her look throughout the years but she really helped to define makeup, hair and clothing trends in the 80s. From the teased hair, colourful eye makeup and extremely bushy eyebrows-Madonna is without a doubt a huge makeup icon for a decade that a lot of us would like to forget about :/

7. Gwen Stefani-Maybe she wouldnt be most people’s top pick as a makeup icon from the 90s but she’s a favorite of mine and I had to include her into the mix. I loved Gwen’s boyish yet girlie look as the lead singer of the Pop-Ska band No Doubt. To this day she is one of my all time favorite makeup icons and she makes me want to never leave my house without a bright red lip!

8. Lady Gaga-I have had the opportunity to do Lady Gaga’s makeup before so I thought she would be the perfect celebrity to transform into. She is so outside of the box when it comes to her makeup look and she is a great makeup icon for current times.

So needless to say, I had WAY too much fun turning myself into these characters and editing my video entry for Canada’s Best Beauty Talent. I wasnt selected to be on the show but my friend Cait Mizzi was and it was a great to watch her in action. Now time to watch my video-ENJOY!

‘THROWBACK THURSDAY’ Bridal Makeup for a Blue Jay’s Bride

Last year I had the honor of glamming up a bride named Kim who just happened to be marrying former Major League Baseball player Roberto Alomar. Although the wedding was on a Wednesday once you realize the significance of the date it all made sense. They ended up tying the knot on 12-12-12.

Any Toronto Blue Jays fans would immediately note that ’12’ was Roberto’s number. And currently the #12 banner proudly hangs in the Rogers Centre because the Blue Jays retired that number after Roberto was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

I met with Kim about a month before the date to do a trial on herself and her beautiful 15-year old daughter. For someone marrying a baseball legend you would never know, Kim was super nice and down to earth. She wanted a simple look with fresh looking skin that we could easily transition into more of an evening/glam look for the dinner. The color themes of the wedding were white, black and royal blue. Wedding planner extraordinaire-Melissa Andre transformed the AGO into a winter wonderland for the ceremony and reception. Check out this video to get a glimpse of the fabulous day!

For Kim’s makeup we decided on a palette of cooler toned colors that would compliment this theme. For her eyes I used MAC eyeshadows in Brule, Seedy Pearl, Sketch and Carbon and lined her eyes with Blacktrack Fluidline.

Her glowing skin was created using a combo of MAC’s Select Cover up, Face Atelier‘s Ultra Foundation and Mineralize Skinfinish Natural-also from MAC.

Kim also liked more of a soft lip so we ended up using a lustre lipstick from MAC called Syrup which I mixed with lip balm.

Kim changed her dress for the evening and I bumped up her makeup by adding more of Carbon eyeshadow and strengthening the contours of her face using Rimmel‘s Bronzer in Sun Dance.

It was such a magical wedding to be participate in and it was pretty cool to be there watching it all unfold with other baseball greats like Cito Gaston and Kelly Gruber.

I tweeted to Roberto today to say Happy Anniversary to him and Kim and he tweeted back a sweet message:

‘THROWBACK THURSDAY’ My wedding makeup and hair

Wow what a week! I just had 20 gigs in 1 week that included lots of makeup and hair for the Toronto Film Festival, a bridal editorial, glamming up a soap opera actress for various television appearances, a corporate video shoot for RBC, a wedding, an engagement shoot and a fitness photo session! INSANE but I survived and loved every minute of it

The icing on top of this super busy/exciting week-it was my first wedding anniversary! Yup on September 15^th 2012 I married the love of my life.

I have done hair and makeup for so many weddings and finally last year I got to experience what it was like to be a bride. One question that Im asked the most is if I did my own makeup and hair . The answer is actually yes and no….I did my own makeup but I had a friend do my hair. I originally had full intentions of doing my own hair but about a year prior to my wedding I met Justin Rousseau. We both worked for Loreal for Toronto Fashion Week. I was on the makeup team and he was on the hair team. Justin’s hair station was right across from my makeup station and as the week went on I witnessed masterpiece after masterpiece of hairstyles being done by him. I cannot stress how much of a hair genius he is! I asked him if he could do my hair for my wedding and he said yes!!! I knew I wanted an updo that was more focused on my left side to balance the flourished one shoulder of my dress. When I look back at my wedding photos I can honestly say that my hair was one of my favorite things from that day. Here are some shoots of my wedding hair:

I knew 100% that I would do my own makeup. Firstly I like to do my makeup, I find it calming and its part of my everyday routine. Secondly I have never had anyone do my makeup better than what I can do on myself so there really was no other option. The look I was going after with my makeup was old Hollywood glamour that wasn’t too dramatic. Something that was classic and timeless.

‘THROW BACK THURSDAY’ Jonathan Toews and Makeup for Men-Grooming

After all the excitement of the Stanley Cup Finals coming to a close this week I thought the perfect Throw Back Thursday would be to talk about when I worked with Chicago Blackhawks’ Captain Jonathan Toews back in 2011. The year before was huge for Jonathan having won not only the Stanley Cup as one of the youngest Captains in the NHL but he also brought home an Olympic Gold medal for Team Canada-not too shabby for a 23 year old! I had the honour of working with him for a series of photo shoots and videos for The Canadian Tire Hockey School.

Jonathan is a founding member of the school where he gives young hockey players advice and information about the sport. For this shoot I had the easy task of powdering down Jonathan’s nose! For male makeup or grooming as we call it, it’s all about using minimal products. The last thing you want to do is use too much and have the guy look like he is in fact wearing makeup. The products that I used on Jonathan were a thin coat of Photo Finish Primer from Smashbox which smoothed out the texture of his skin. It also helped to control his shine.

I used Select Cover Up from MAC Cosmetics in the areas that needed it most like under his eyes, around the nose and on the neck to cover any nicks or razor bumps. I would never use an all over foundation on men unless it is absolutely necessary. Jonathan luckily had great skin so I was able to get away with just using Select Cover Up which looks like a second skin, not like makeup. Then to set the concealer and to touch Jonathan up throughout the day I used Blot Powder also from MAC. Another tip is to have plenty of paper towel handy when working with men. They can sweat A LOT under hot set lights and blotting papers just wont cut it!

It was as simple as that. For male grooming I think the appropriate acronym would be ‘KISS’. Keep It Simple Stupid or lets say Superstar! There is no need to overdo it. Always go in with a soft application and you can always add more later if necessary. My favorite part of the shoot was Jonathan brought his Olympic Gold Medal and ring and even let his goofy makeup artist try them on!

Congrats Jonathan on yet another Stanley Cup win and on behalf of all Toronto Maple Leaf fans we thank you for taking the win from Boston! Good job kid!
